Environmental Initiatives King Pine Ski Area at Purity Spring Resort

  • An additional 57 “energy-efficient” SMI tower snow guns and two new electric compressors, resulting in a 40% increase in pumping capacity added in 2010/11, significantly reducing the amount of fuel used to operate snowmaking.
  • King Pine uses a product called “Snowmax” when making snow. Snowmax maximizes snowmaking time by allowing making more snow from every gallon of water pumped. With the ability to make snow at 26.8°, snowmakers can make snow at higher temperatures throughout a longer window.
  • King Pine offers single-stream recycling, which is the recycling process of mixing paper, plastic, cans and glass in one collection bin. Two bins are available in every trash receptacle location; one bin for recyclables and one for items not accepted by the program such as general garbage, food waste, diapers and plastic bags.
  • Guest areas at King Pine and Purity Spring Resort use recycling containers. “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” signage is used as well.
  • Participation in the NH Department of Transportation’s Anti-Idling Campaign. Guests and employees at King Pine, Purity Spring Resort and Danforth Bay are asked to shut down running engines through signage in drop-off/pick-up areas. Through the use of company-wide newsletters, employees are being taught the many ways they can lower their energy consumption.
  • All lodging properties (11 buildings) are heated with bio/fuel (Over 100,000 gallons purchased in last 2 heating seasons).
  • The multiple laundry and kitchen areas at King Pine and Purity Spring already use or are currently testing environmentally-friendly, organic based cleaners.
  • The resort maintenance building uses a recirculation system that separates water and oil from the cleaning bays. This and all waste oil from Purity businesses get recycled in a waste-oil furnace during the heating months.
