King Pine To Close For Season At End Of Business Day, Sunday March 15

To our King Pine guests and staff,

With national and regional efforts to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 remaining at heightened levels, we have made the decision to end our ski season two weeks earlier than we had originally planned and we will be closed for the season at the end of business today, Sunday, March 15.

This is not an easy decision as we have enjoyed an otherwise great season, but this has become an entirely unusual situation. Having operated this weekend with the best of intentions, it is apparent that the current environment has impacted “business as usual” for our guests and staff. Even only hours following our decision Friday morning to try and continue operating, safety measures continued to increase and it now goes beyond just having to cancel all of our remaining spring scheduled events and reduce gathering in our base lodge. Closing now also effectively minimizes possible COVID-19 exposure for all of us and joins a national effort to flatten the pandemic curve.

Any employees who were scheduled for this week and are not able to work as a result of our closing will be compensated for the week. As regularly occurs at the end of our season, department managers and our human resources will also be working with staff to close the season and be looking ahead to plans for next winter or will be transitioning to other departments within King Pine, Purity Spring Resort, Camp Tohkomeupog or Danforth Bay Camping & RV Resort that are preparing for the spring and summer operating seasons.

Any online tickets that were purchased in advance for originally scheduled remaining days will be canceled and refunded. Any unused days on a 2019/20 Triple King Card will be valid for use at the start of next season until 12/24/20. For all of our current 2019/20 season passholders, instead of a June 1 deadline to renew their pass at current early rates, we are extending that to October 1. For any of our Purity Spring Resort lodging guests, we are waiving cancellation fees for existing and new reservations until a yet to be determined time. We apologize to our Pioneer Race League members, as well as all who looked forward to our annual spring Cardboard Box Derby and Pond Skim, for having to cancel remaining scheduled events. We hope our King Pine family and kids will keep their creative and fun ideas saved up for next season.

As our base lodge is prepared for spring and summer use, our cleaning crew and maintenance teams will be “spring” deep cleaning adhering to protocols for cleaning high-touch surfaces, sanitizing and washing hands regularly. Our staff is also cognizant of and asked to stay home when they may show any symptoms of a contagious illness.

There is much above that I am aware you are hearing from so many other businesses and I am sorry that we are having to follow suit. I have great pride in the spirit of my family’s independent ski area and though it was my hope to finish up our season as planned, it is now my hope you understand and may even support our decision to end our season at this time. We look forward to welcoming you again next December when we begin the 2020/21 winter ski season.

Thank you,
Andrew Mahoney
